Sculpin, thanks for typing up my phone post on the 20-year-old tragedy in Bhopal, India. The hour-long documentary I saw on PBS was called, "A Cloud Over Bhopal." The KCTS Channel 9 site says, "Repeats 8/19 at 3:00 a.m." Friday, August 19, 2005 3:00 AM Channel: 9
Just past midnight on December 3, 1984, a dazzling cloud of 6.3 tons of toxic gas escaped from Union Carbide, an American pesticide factory outside of the ancient Indian city of Bhopal. A CLOUD OVER BHOPAL tells the story of the tragic incident that left 30,000 people dead and injured 500,000 more.
Based on the book, 'It Was Five Past Midnight in Bhopal,' by Dominique LaPierre, this documentary shows the human side of a devastating event that occurred halfway around the world. The program contrasts life as it once was in the culturally vibrant city, rich in natural resources, with today's Bhopal, blighted by the rotting factory and home to countless victims. Many people lost entire families and today continue to suffer from physical, mental and emotional trauma.
To make a tax deductible donation (online, by mail, or by phone) to the "Margaret Mead award-winning Sambhavna Clinic" in Bhopal and/or the "International Campaign for Justice in Bhopal," see: https://www.panna.org/system/onlineDonationBhopal.html
To donate to the Bhopal Medical Appeal & Sambhavna Trust (which might be a more direct method than through PANNA) or to see a graphic list of the items they need & how much they cost, see: http://www.bhopal.org/donations/index.html
To read more about the series of careless events that led to the tragedy that killed tens of thousands and is still causing birth defects to this day (not to mention the crowded slum in the shadows of the rusting pesticide plant, a slum filled with people depending on water that is still contaminated to infuriating, unbelievable, horrific levels of pesticides because the water trucked in isn't even enough for everyone to have a single cup of it), the petition suggests: http://www.bhopal.net/, http://www.studentsforbhopal.org, or http://www.bhopal.org/ |
